OUR STANDING ON JOB SHARING.

Recruitment is challenging right now, for both job seekers and employers. It’s hard work, emotionally taxing and pressurised. After all, any organisation is only as good as the people in it.

At NOWIE, we are committed to advocating for fair and transparent pay across the events industry. Our freelancer pay guidelines have proved popular and a useful reference point for the freelance workforce (and those engaging them) and we’re working on an equivalent document for employed people.

We also know that the gender pay gap is a major issue for women across all sectors of the events industry. As an example, just a few weeks ago Amplify Her Voice highlighted an average 29% gender pay gap across the major music companies. That means that women working in these organisations are basically working for free from the end of September each year compared to their male counterparts.

We know this isn’t an issue we can tackle overnight but we want to take steps to improve things and one way we’ll be doing this is in the jobs we share - going forward, we will no longer share or promote roles that do not advertise a salary or salary range.

A generic ‘salary commensurate with experience’? No thanks. ‘Competitive’? Let’s see what you think that is! ‘In line with industry standard’? Well, we’ve outlined that the industry standard is women being paid less than men so no thanks to that too. The job is the job and its value to an organisation should be outlined at the start. This also allows potential candidates to have all the key information before they enter the application process and can save valuable time on both sides of recruitment.

To the employers and recruiters who already do this - we see you, and thank you for playing your part in making conversations around pay fairer.

To those who don’t yet include salaries in their job adverts - we understand that sharing salaries isn’t always straightforward but it is so beneficial to both employers and job seekers. It’s a win-win in our eyes, so we hope you’ll consider changing your approach.
